H+U was tasked with dividing a larger “Safety and Security Center” building program into two phases, with Airport Fire Station No. 2 as Phase 1 and the larger Safety and Security Center as Phase 2. The new fire station was completed in the summer of 2024, and Phase 2 broke ground in July 2024.

The station was constructed in a sensitive area of MSP Airport, adjacent to the Air Traffic Control Tower, runways, and radar equipment, requiring all construction activities to be meticulously planned and precisely coordinated with the ongoing design work for Phase 2. H+U was responsible for evaluating site logistics, managing costs, and pricing over 100 design options, including a wide variety of systems and materials, to ensure the station would have the most sustainable, reliable, and resilient systems available.

Once the second phase is complete, the combined Safety and Security Center at MSP Airport will serve as a sustainable, multi-disciplinary public safety facility, housing new headquarters for the Airport Police, Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Station, Emergency Operations Center, Emergency Command Center, and Airside Operations Center.
