H+U served as the Construction Manager for the Barack and Michelle Obama Montessori Elementary School. The project was a major renovation and additions effort that modernized the historic 1925 to 1926 buildings and prepared them to serve a unified PreK through 8 program. The completed facility provided renovated learning spaces, updated gym and cafeteria areas, an improved media center and art rooms, and modernized administrative spaces.

Two new construction areas were added to enhance circulation and create a secure and identifiable main entry. The project also included site improvements, building systems replacements, reroofing, and interior upgrades that supported expanded academic programming and long-term district needs.

To complete the work while programs remained in operation, H+U Construction implemented a detailed multi-phase approach that allowed students and staff to move between renovated areas as work progressed. The team addressed challenges related to boiler replacement logistics, hazardous materials, historic building conditions, and limited site access, and they applied solutions that improved safety and schedule performance. At completion, the updated campus supported approximately 900 students and fulfilled the goals of the district’s Envision SPPS facilities plan by delivering a modern, flexible, and culturally responsive learning environment for the community.
